Fake Publisher's Clearing House Scam (August 2013)

The Fairmont Police Department asks area residents to be cautious of phone callers claiming to be from Publisher's Clearing House. The scammers tell the victim that they have won a large sum of money and encourage the victim to purchase a $200-$1000 money card from a big box store like Wal-Mart or Walgreens so their "cash prize" can be deposited onto their card balance. The scammers then instruct the victim to give them the pin number on the money card which the scammers then use to drain the balance of the money card.  The Fairmont Police Department would like to remind citizens that legitamate sweepstakes never require a purchase to win a prize.
